Saturday 7th February - Centenary Quiz Night

Thanks to all those who joined us for the entertaining centenary quiz extravaganza in St Mary's school hall on Saturday 7th February.  Sixteen teams competed for the covetous prize; St Bridget's Mastermind 2009.  The evening raised a total of £325.50 which will be used to support future parish projects and events.  Many thanks to the volunteers who gave their time to make the quiz an outstanding success.  Alex on behalf of the organising group.

Sunday 1st March -  Centenary Pancake Event

There was a lovely atmosphere in the hall on Sunday. Amid the strawberry jam, chocolate sauce and other delights, the hall was full of children and the young at heart filling and enjoying their pancakes.  The chefs had a tough time keeping up with the demand but managed to ensure no-one went away hungry.  Thanks to the parishioners who regularly attend after 10.00am Mass teas & coffee and made  way for us all.  Many thanks as well to all who helped to organise this successful event.

Sunday 26th April -  United Service of Thanksgiving

A good number of Isleworth Christians attended our Ecumenical Celebration last Sunday afternoon.  We were celebrating 160th year since the building of the Congregational Chapel, 40 years since the rebuilding of All Saints’ Church (by the river) as well as our own Centenary.  This was a joyful occasion and an opportunity for all local Christian people to rejoice together.  Many thanks to all the helpers who made this such a memorable occasion.

Sunday 3rd May - Centenary Mass

A big thank you to to all those who worked so hard to make last weeks centenary weekend so successful and memorable.  Those who prepared the liturgy; musicians; school choir; servers; the flowers; cleaners; those who organised and made the food; the young people who served it.  A special thank you to members of the centenary committee who have done so much work.  It is a pity of course that the Cardinal could not be with us – but we were fortunate in having Bishop Stack to stand in.  We will invite the Cardinal to another event, as he will not be too far away.  Thank you too for those who helped with the afternoon’s Pilgrimage to Tyburn to celebrate the anniversary of the Isleworth Martyrs and Protomartyrs of the Reformation.  It was another very memorable occasion. Feedback would suggest that we might make this an annual occasion.

Sunday 10th May - Godspell performed by the Twickenham Operatic Society

Last Sunday a group of about thirty from St Bridget’s made the short trip to the newest and nearest theatre in our neighbourhood, the 400-seater Live Room at Twickenham Stadium.  This exciting venue has plush seating with excellent visibility, large stage and even larger adjacent bar.  We saw a new production by Twickenham Operatic Society, a toned-down version of the1970’s rock opera/musical.  It tells the gospel story of Christ in a modern setting and was played to a nearly full house. Few can have been disappointed.  In a breathless series of song and dance cameos with a simple sometimes childlike dialogue, the most important stories from St Matthew’s gospel are “spelt out”.  The production is lifted high by some great and often familiar numbers (e.g. Prepare Ye the Way of the Lord and Day by Day) beautifully sung with accompanying 5-piece band and large, enthusiastic cast.  Paul Lyons grows into his role as Jesus to portray the Passion in a hugely stirring and evocative way.  If Christ had been born in the present you wonder if he might have used a similar idiom to put his message across.

Monday 25th May - "Hidden Isleworth" Heritage Walk of Isleworth

Hidden Isleworth, not any more!!  Last Monday, all was revealed when about sixty people turned up including many parishioners for another of our centenary events.  This time, The Hounslow Heritage Guides, walked us around Isleworth and described social and historical events that make Isleworth such a lovely place to live. There were also three guided tours of our church by our veryown historian, Stuart Bagnall, which were exceptional and indeed the icing of the cake except there was plenty of icing on the cakes supplied with teas afterwards.  A big thank you to every one who came alone not forgetting the many helpers who made this such an enjoyable event.  Thank you again. David Bright
