Getting Involved

“Become a Friend of St Bridget’s……..” Father Stewart launched the Stewardship Campaign with these words urging parishioners to become more involved in the life and work of the parish. There is no real end date to this campaign, volunteering is an ongoing vocation.

A new idea behind the campaign is the voucher scheme, to enable volunteers to commit themselves to one or more tasks for a specific number of hours across the course of a year.  We will invite volunteers to renew their commitment annually.  Volunteers are always needed and most tasks can be made flexible to fit around busy schedules.  It is possible to volunteer at any time outside this campaign period.

Stewardship Campaign

The early response to Phase I: Faith and Church has been encouraging, a good start, with some 25 new people offering within the first two weeks to give of their time and talents to keep St Bridget’s fully functional in this vital area.

If you missed the launch of the campaign or have not yet responded please do see the new display in the Porch which illustrates the main areas where we are seeking participation in Phase I. Take a white envelope from the table by the display if you don’t have one.  It contains a letter from Father Stewart and a voucher booklet to help you select what task appeals to you. There are also task description sheets available giving more details of the different options.

Task Descriptions

Once you have completed your voucher(s), please return to the Parish Office together with your entry to the prize draw (at the back of the booklet). The prize draw will be held after Phase II and the first prize is "A Guided Tour of Westminster Cathedral with Father Stewart and Afternoon Tea" for winning volunteer and up to four guests.  There is no real end date to this campaign, volunteering is an ongoing vocation.

It is important to understand not only the spiritual reasons for volunteering your time and talent but also the practical reasons that we are desperately short of help in all areas of the parish.  It is hoped that we will receive a positive response from parishioners as with the very successful Planned Giving campaign.  Otherwise we are putting the continuation of some parish activities and events in doubt.  We are particularly asking parents whose children attend the local schools to get involved as we have so many families who attend St Bridget's.

Whilst this campaign is to recruit new volunteers, we do acknowledge with enormous thanks and praise the parishioners who at present volunteer their time and talent each year whatever the task and especially those who have given their commitment of many, many years.  You are all so valued and you have given a wonderful gift to St Bridget’s, which will not be forgotten.

Phase I of the Campaign will be followed by Phase II: Service early in Lent.

This is what we are about: We plant seeds that one day will grow. We water seeds already planted, knowing that they hold future promise. We lay foundations that will need further development. We provide yeast that produces effects beyond our capabilities. We cannot do everything and there is a sense of liberation in realising that. This enables us to do something, and to do it very well.

It may be incomplete, but it is a beginning, a step along the way, an opportunity for God's grace to enter and do the rest. We may never see the end results, but that is the difference between the master builder and the worker. We are workers, not master builders, ministers, not messiahs. We are prophets of a future not our own.
Archbishop Oscar Arnulfo Romero

For many of us it is enough that we attend church regularly and receive the sacraments at the due time. But for increasing numbers this is simply not enough. We feel the need to respond to the vocation we received at baptism.

Years ago a vocation was seen as a calling to the priesthood or the religious life. Nowadays we have rediscovered a truth that had been lost sight of; the truth that as Christians we are all called in various ways to be active in the church and in the mission of the church in the wider world.

It is up to the church to provide structures in which we can express our vocation and commitment. The church must also offer leadership to guide us on our way.

One way of expressing our individual vocation is through small communities.

Small Communities

Small communities offer a good way for lay people to participate in the day to day activities of the parish and community and experience a sense of belonging. In our parish, small communities have been formed over the years. Some continue to meet because the bonds that developed were too strong to break.

These are just groups of ordinary parishioners who get together for a particular purpose but found that there was much more that they could do and wanted to do. They have stumbled upon a profound truth – that we are the church. We are responsible, under the leadership of our priest, for the life and continued well-being of the parish and for fulfilling God’s mission for it. We have to be willing to take our place on the journey of the pilgrim people of God. The gentle guidance and inspiration of the Spirit will grant us wisdom and discernment as we struggle to give expression to Jesus’ mission for our day and time.

So much for the vision but what about the practicalities?

If you have time or talent, no matter how small, please join us.
